Locating the best Dentist to fit your particular needs may not be as easy as you think.  Here are some practical suggestions to help your search.

If you are one of the more than 50% of Rochesterians who do not have a dentist, then how do you find a dentist?  Locating the best fit for your needs may not be as easy as you think.  As with every profession, there are dentists who are extremely capable and those with less experience and different interests.  Some personalities may appeal to you while others may not.  The yellow pages and on-line directory ads may not be the most reliable sources of information.

Begin the search to find a dentist by asking family, friends, neighbors or co-workers for the name of a dentist they feel comfortable visiting.  Or, call the Monroe County Dental Society for a recommendation.  Ask your sources what they like about the office and the dentist.

Then, visit more than one dentist before making a decision.  Pay attention to the interaction between dentist and staff.  You will probably come to share the staff's opinion of the dentist.
 

Talk to the dentist about the services that you need, or are interested in.  Ask.  Is the dentist a member of professional organizations such as the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and the American Dental Association (ADA)?  What courses has the dentist attended recently?  What services are completed in-office and which are referred out?  How are emergencies handled?  A dentist who is a member of these professional organizations attends continuing education courses and is likely to be up-to-date with the latest procedures and attentive to your particular needs.

After you have selected the office and dentist, schedule an appointment for a cleaning, exam and x-rays.  This visit is your opportunity to confirm that the dentist and staff are personable, patient and caring.  Consider.  Where you seated on time? Was the procedure comfortable?  Did the dentist take the time to answer all of your questions?  If your expectations have been equaled or exceeded, then congratulate yourself.  You have found your dentist.
